ENVIRONMENTAL APRIL | GERMAN MOVIE DAY

GERMAN MOVIE DAY
Wednesday, 8 April, 11: 30 am
Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad, Entry: free

As a part of this year’s Environmental April’s program, we are pleased to present two films: Wenn der Eisberg kalbt (When the Iceberg Melts) and Recipes for Disaster. Both films are devoted to the topic of climate change and depict people’s attempts to fight the treat: sometimes naive and funny, sometimes innovative and progressive. The films will be shown with English subtitles.

short film | WENN DER EISBERG KALBT
(When the iceberg melts)
Fiction. Director: Sylvie Hohlbaum, Gregor Schubert,
Germany (2002), 6 min.

Manfred Binder is an ‘inventor’ in the Hesse countryside. To save humankind from rising sea levels, he is creating a gargantuan ‘survival capsule’ which will float on the world's oceans.

feature film | RECIPES FOR DISASTER
Documentary | Comedy
Director: John Webster,
Finland (2008), 85 min.

How can we as individuals combat climate change? The filmmaker John Webster and his family are looking for an answer, leading a low-carbon lifestyle. Over the course of one year, they reduce their ecological ‘footprint’: they do not use a car, electricity or plastic, eat only local food and radically change their diet. Humorous and convincing, this film depicts the daily obstacles and adversities, as well as the newfound freedoms, which they encounter.

Final call for Photography Submissions!

After the success of the first edition of PERSPEKTIVEN, which culminated in a grand group exhibition of 45 photographs depicting various aspects of the life-giving element water, graciously inaugurated on 26th September 2014 by Shri. B.P. Acharya, Principal Secretary Planning Department & Tourism and Culture Department, Government of Telangana, Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad is pleased to announce the second edition of this unique initiative to promote photographic talent.

About the new edition:
The theme for the second edition of the PERSPEKTIVEN photography series is MOTHER EARTH. Photographic submissions are invited, and selected entries will be displayed as a photographic exhibition at Hamburg Hall, Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad.

About the theme :
The Earth does not belong to us, but we belong to the Earth. Our Mother Earth is the source of all life, whether it be plants, the two-legged, four-legged, winged ones or human beings. The Mother Earth is the greatest teacher, if we listen, observe and respect her. When we live in harmony with the Mother Earth, she will recycle the things we consume and make them available to our children. The Mother Earth is a living entity that maintains life. We need to speak out in a good way whenever we see someone abusing the Earth. Just as we would protect our own mother, so must we protect the Earth. We need to ensure that the land, water, and air will be intact for our children and for our children’s children.

This edition of Perspektiven is an attempt to evoke and remind all of us of these natural emotions and revive long-buried instincts by a meaningful and thought-provoking display of photographs depicting all aspects of Mother Earth – her beauty, her joys, her sorrows and her pain.

To be born a girl, violence begins in the womb - disparity begins before birth as increasing female foeticide, as selective sex abortions. With growing lack of gender sensitivity towards women the repression continues in many forms of low tolerance in societal outlook and increasing violence - as more domestic work for the girl, low education priority, as child labour, early marriages to elderly males, early pregnancies, forced sex trade, vulnerability to sexual diseases like HIV, rape - violence all the way has robed the girl child and the feminine their music, their song and their dance in life, the right to live and die in peace.

These installations and new media art works by twelve artists address in symbolic, narrative, poetic forms, these aspects of female gender suppression in a variety of mediums and forms with references from history, addressing the political, societal, psychological and philosophical aspects of femininity - to express the joys of living as a woman, to claim rights of their dignity and magnificence, and to nourish the nature of the feminine strength and beauty - Dr.Avani Rao Gandra, Curator

WOMEN'S MARCH | TALK | Women & Recent Laws by Kalpana Kannabiran

Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad is pleased to announce a special talk on the occasion of Women’s March. This month will have a special focus on women as we celebrate WOMEN’S MARCH 2015!

TALK
WOMEN AND RECENT LAWS: FORWARD MARCH
by Kalpana Kannabiran

Director, Council for Social Development

Time: 6:30 pm
Date: Tuesday, 10 March 2015
Venue: Hamburg Hall, Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad
Entry : free

On the occasion of Women's March, Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad is pleased to present a talk by Kalpana Kannabiran, on Women and Recent Laws in India.

Today's India offers a lot of opportunities to women, with women having a voice in everyday life, the business world as well as in political life. However, even though India is moving away from the male dominated culture, discrimination is still highly visible in rural as well as in urban areas, throughout all strata of society. While women are guaranteed equality under the constitution, legal protection has a limited effect, where patriarchal traditions prevail. There still prevails a stark difference in litteracy rates in the country (Men (India): 82.14% ; Women (India): 65.46%  ; Women (AP): 59.7% - 2011 Census of India). Spreading awareness, especially those of women's rights, is the need of the hour if we are to ensure that half our population does not remain oppressed. Sustainable and long-term development is not possible without the participation and empowerment of women. Only if they participate in the economic and societal development, can the full potential of India's society be unfolded.

About the speaker:
Kalpana Kannabiran is the recipient of the inaugural Amartya Sen Award for Social Scientists, 2012, for her work in Law. She is a sociologist and legal researcher and is currently Director, Council for Social Development, Hyderabad, an autonomous research institute supported by the Indian Council for Social Science Research. She was awarded the VKRV Rao Prize for Social Science Research in the field of Social Aspects of Law by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) in 2003. She was part of the founding faculty of National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University of Law where she taught sociology and law for a decade (1999–2009) and is a founder member of Asmita Resource Centre for Women where she has coordinated research and legal outreach for women. Kannabiran has been the general secretary of the Indian Association for Women’s Studies (1998–2000) and is active in the International Sociological Association. She was a member of the Expert Group on the Equal Opportunity Commission, Government of India (2007–2008) and member of the Expert Group on Legal Education Reform in Kerala, Government of Kerala. She has been an activist in the women’s movement since the late 1970s.

TALK: Light & life - Real-life applications of photochemistry

LECTURE
LIGHT AND LIFE: REAL LIFE APPLICATIONS OF PHOTOCHEMISTRY
BY PROF. V. RAMAMURTHY
Department of Chemistry, University of Miami Coral Gables, FL, USA

Time: 3:30 pm
Date: 5 March 2015
Venue: CSIR-IICT Auditorium, Uppal

About the lecture:
Photochemistry deals with the understanding and utilization of interaction of light with matter. Sun, the ultimate source of light, has been recognized and worshipped by various civilizations as the origin of prosperity for several centuries. Only during the last hundred years has the properties of light and the mechanism of its interaction with molecules and matter been understood and has resulted in its exploitation for the benefit of the society. Thus photochemistry and photophysics play a crucial role in our everyday life, a role not sufficiently recognized by the common person. This talk will provide examples of how ‘interaction of light with matter’ has changed the way we do things during the last five decades.

About the speaker:
V. Ramamurthy is a a researcher and administrator (department chair, during 2004 to 2014) at University of Miami (2005- till date). He has co-authored a textbook “Modern Molecular Organic Photochemistry” (N. J. Turro,V. Ramamurthy and J. C. Scaiano), which is of significant value to photochemists and physical organic chemists. Ramamurthy has authored 370 scientific publications and co-edited 20 monographs and special issues for various journals.
