PANEL DISCUSSION | Food Safety - Consumer Rights in India and Germany

To draw attention to current issues of FOOD SAFETY and to look for practical solutions for consumers, Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad is pleased to invite you to a

FOOD SAFETY - CONSUMER RIGHTS IN INDIA & GERMANY

About the panel discussion:It takes a long way for food to get from farm to plate. And this way is not always safe. Food safety has become a major issue in India after the Maggi case. But the problem is not new. Two out of three samples of milk did not meet prescribed standards in a nationwide survey by FSSAI in 2011.Many pesticides regularly used in India are banned in other countries for their bad impact on the nervous, reproductive system etc.

So, how can one avoid harm caused by food-borne illnesses? What can consumers do to protect themselves – in a long perspective and in their everyday life? These and other issues will be discussed by our experts on the panel :

  • Radhika Subramanyam, Product Head for Food Certifications at TÜV Rheinland will talk about food safety standards and certifications in India and Germany. TÜV Rheinland is a global provider of technical, safety, and certification services with its headquarters in Germany.
  • Mr. G. Santhanarajan ​will give a talk on most common food adulterations in India. He will demonstrate simple ways to test grocery goods at home with Adulteration Testing Kit of his authorship. Mr. G. Santhanarajan is a Director in charge of CONCERT, a Centre for Consumer Education, Research, Training and Testing, partner institution of Consumers Association of India.
  • Mrs​ ​Rajam​ ​Ganesan, prominent Indian consumer activist, Honorary General Secretary of the Consumer Care Centre, Hyderabad, and the State and National Award recipient for Consumer Protection will help the audience understand the laws and mechanisms to protect their rights as consumers.
The discussion will be moderated by:
  • Dr Kinnera Murthy, a Strategy Consultant, Independent Director, and Trustee of a women's NGO, Sankalp who has worked for over 3 decades at the Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad in various positions, including Dean of Studies.

Emerging Palettes is an annual art exhibition organised in collaboration with the Alliance Francaise Hyderabad and Shrishti Art Gallery to provide a platform to final year fine art students (MVA / MFA). This year, the participating institutions will be the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda (MSU), the Sarojini Naidu Scholl of Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad (HCU), Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, Hyderabad (JNAFAU).

GERMAN MOVIE NIGHT
DANCING DREAMS (Tanzträume)

This is a special screening to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the legendary German dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch. 

In 2008, world-famous dancer Pina Bausch selected 40 teenagers who had never heard of her to be part of her dance piece Kontakthof ("Contact Zone").
The film Tanzträume documents these rehearsals at the Wuppertal Dance Theatre one year before Pina Bausch’s death. It is an impressive tribute to the choreographer’s love of people and, not least, to the trials of coming of age.

Padmavathi Chandramouli is currently Student Counselor and Information Officer at DAAD Information Center at Chennai. DAAD stands for "Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst", the German Academic Exchange Service. As official representative of German Universities abroad, DAAD provides information about institutions of higher education as well as research institutions in Germany.

This is an informal setting of a group of people, who practice and enjoy German, it is coordinated by a moderator. This time we will discuss the topic “Wer sind die Deutschen” – Who are the Germans? The programme will include:

- Presentation-quiz
- German refreshments : Prost!

YOUNG & WILD – LATEST SHORT FILM DEVELOPMENTS IN GERMANY

The new millennium since 2000 marked a beginning of a new era for the German film industry. German cinematography is enjoying its renaissance with bigger-budget films, good returns and growing audience. But what do we know about about the latest developments in German cinema? Prominent names, remarkable films, new trends? This will be discussed in a talk of Robin Mallick, programmes director of South Asia at Goethe-Institut New Delhi and a former festival director at Filmfest Dresden. The programme will also include screening of short films by young German filmmakers.

About the speaker:
Robin Mallick was born in Wuppertal (Germany) in 1970. After finishing studies of International Cultural and Business Studies at the University of Passau (Germany) and at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), he moved on to Dresden. From 2000 until 2009 he was festival director at Filmfest Dresden - International Short Film Festival. In addition he was general secretary of the European Coordination of Film Festivals, which comprised a network of some 250 festivals, between 2002 and 2007. Since June 2009, he has worked as regional programme director South Asia at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi.

About "Destination Deutschland”:
This talk will open “Destination Deutschland”, to be held from 10th to 16th July 2015. This is a special cultural program which allows visitors to get a glimpse of German culture, language, and way of living right here in Hyderabad. These will be presented through a multimedia exhibition with posters, photography and films; two talks on German culture, and on higher education and research in Germany; and an informal gathering called a Stammtisch.

Talk by BSAP | Antarctica - The White Continent

A talk will include a brief history of the exploration of Antarctica, followed by a photo presentation and a discussion of penguins, seals, whales, landscapes and the impact of the climate change on the Antarctic environment and the Earth.
The speaker, Mr P. Janardhan Reddy is an avid wild life photographer from Hyderabad, deeply interested in environmental issues and wild life.

German Movie Day | OH, BOY
8 July, 11:30 am

This tragicomedy is a self-ironic portrait of a young man who drops out of university, has no job and ends up wandering the streets of the city he lives: Berlin, encountering a range of characters along the way. The film deals with the desire to participate in life and the difficulty to find one's place. 

Talk | Young & Wild – Latest Short Film Developments in Germany
10 July, 6:30 pm
Goethe-Zentrum Hyderabad 
The one-hour programme will include a talk on latest developments in German cinema and the screening of short films by young German filmmakers. The speaker is Robin Mallick, programmes director of South Asia at Goethe-Institut New Delhi and a former director International Short Film Festival in Dresden.

In memoriam. Musical Tribute to Shri Vithal Rao

Dear Goethe Friends,

We have lost a great person and a treasure in Shri Vithal Rao, the famous ghazal singer, and one of the last court musicians of the Nizam of Hyderbad.

He was a legendary man who gave happiness through his music to so many people for the most part of his life. A great human being and a great musician, he had a wealth of musical compositions that he imparted to his students worldwide.

Surmandal will paying a musical tribute to him during their next concert by the famous Mohan veena player, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, on Sunday, 5th July at 9:30 am, at the Sailing Annexe, when they will request the Telangana government to help the family he leaves behind. He was the real brand Ambassador of Telangana. His family members will also be invited to grace the occasion.

The event is entirely free for the music lovers of Hyderabad.
